Movie Trailer Review

For this unit we had to get a movie of our choice and once we had done we had to change the genre of it. For my film I chose to do How To Train Your Dragon 2 the original genre is a animated, fantasy. I decided to change the genre to a horror the reason for this is I feel it suit the horror genre as well because of all the dragons, fire and destruction.

To start this unit I had to put our chosen film in to Adobe Premiere Pro, once I had done that I started to cut my film up. I started by getting rid of the credits as this was not important to my film. I then watched through the first 30 mins of the film and realise there was nothing in it that could make my film a horror so I cut it out. I then did this through the whole film taking bits I need splitting it from the main film if I wanted to use it and if I didn’t I just deleted it from the time line.

Once I had got all the clips I wanted out of my film I looked through all the clips just to double check it was everything I wanted. Once I had done this I re arranged all the clips in to an order I thought was suitable to make it in to a horror.

Once I done this I took out some of the audio of the film, added transitions, effects and music.

Overall I feel like I have done really well with this unit and I feel what I planned to do and what I actually did was identical to what I imagine to come out like.

If I was to ever come back to this unit I would definitely chose another film as I felt to change a animated children’s film in to a horror was a bit more difficult than I imagined but I did it and I’m proud of what I made for this unit.

Film Genre Research

When talking about different genres for film there are loads of different genres out there to watch and to satisfy everyone no matter your age, I’ve chosen

Animation

Animation are films where which are seen as individual drawings, painting or illustrations. They arent really defined as a genre category they are more a film technique but contain genre like elements. This genre is normally aimed at the younger audience.

Adventure

This genre has exciting story lines, they are similar to actions films where they are designed to provide an action-filled and energetic experience for the viewer. They are sometimes unusual, they are bold and are risky. Initiallt the target audience for adventure films were 13-30 year old men but now it has chnaged to all age groups and genders.

War

To make a film in the war genre they are typically about naval, air or land battles. Some of these films that are made now are linked to the 20th century and things that are happing in the really world or what has happened for example the film Patriots Day is a film about Boston Marathon, when two bombs explode on April 15, 2013.

Science

Since genre also know as Sc-fi films are fictional based films based around phenomena. These films are mainly based around time travel, alien worlds, extraterrestrial lifeforms. These films also come along with futuristic elements such as spacecrafts, robots and cyborgs.

Horror

This genre is trying to inflict fear in to the audience and purposely makes the audience scared, disgusted or feared. For this type of genre its intend purpose is to scary the audience and make them fear the film, there are also lots of jump scares in these type of films.

 

Movie Trailer Audience

The film I have chosen to do is How To Train Your Dragon 2, I have chosen this film because it is one of my favourite films. The original genre for this film is Animated, Fantasy.

I’m going to try and change How To Train Your Dragon in to a horror.

Original genre

The original genre audience is instead for all ages from young to old as it is PG rated. The main target audience for this film are children, teenagers and young adults.  Animation is when pictures are put together to make it look like pictures are moving to create the film. In the older days animation films were made by drawing or printed by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to then be put on film. However now they are mainly made with computer generated imagery which can be very detailed.

New genre (horror)

The target audience for horror films are daily adults as the films are rated either 12, 12A, 15 or 18. Some well know films for this genre are, The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween. This genre is intended to scare and make you jump whilst watching it. The horror genre has existed for more than a century from literature authors Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker. To create a tension of horror you need to create tension and be able to scare people, for example people would rather there be an unknown rat then a known snake, also make sure that you don’t show the object that is meant to be the scare of the film more that 10-15 times before the final scare at the end of the film.
